Who Believes in Ghosts?

Do ordinary people believe in ghosts? The answer is Yes! According to one poll, 70% of Americans accept the possibility, and out of that percentage, 80% believe they may have experienced something paranormal. Most people seem to have a story to tell about a paranormal encounter that they or a friend have had.

So, do these experiences prove that ghosts exist or that we my become spirits ourselves? No, for the existence of ghosts to be proven scientifically, we would have to be able force a ghost to appear on demand!

In 1907 a researcher named Duncan McDougal attempted to measure the weight of a soul. He weighed five dying patients as they died. Although two of the five lost an ounce of weight after death, the experiment was considered inconclusive.

What is a Ghost?

When the body ceases to exist, we die. But the energy remains. Energy cannot be destroyed but can only take another form. All living things have energy, and when it is released, it is freed to move about. We may not be able to see this with our eyes, but it is there. Sometimes you may even feel it, like an electric charge that makes your hair stand on end.

Film, video, audio recordings, thermal imagers and other electronic instruments may at times pick up this energy. Although, movies portray all ghosts or spirits as full apparitions, this is far from the norm. Only rarely has a full appartion been photographed. More often they are seen as orbs, mist, shadow or a partial apparition.

There have been rare reports of people being hurt by ghosts. More commonly, they hurt themselves.

ABOUT HAUNTINGS

Residual Haunting

Residual haunting is a past event that was “recorded,” then is replayed. It will appear to be the same scene played over and over, like a tape that is looped. The entity will pay no attention to you and continue the play the scene. These events can be of a person who would do the same action repetitively, such as walk up the same set of stairs each night, thereby leaving an energy impression. These hauntings could be caused by a traumatic event, such as a Civil War battle. There are many accounts of people seeing soldiers fighting or hearing screams of agony when nothing is there. It is like the world is stuck in one moment of time and will continue to repeat it. You will see more apparitions in this type of haunting than any other.

Intelligent Haunting

This is the most common type of haunting. It differs from the Residual Haunting in that the ghost will try to interact with us and act as though they have a connection with the place or person there.

They are best described as as the spirit of an individual, who because of a traumatic or violent event, refuses to “pass on” and remains behind. These spirits may also stay because of a strong emotional tie of love, anger, hate or even unfinished business. Composed of the energy of the deceased, these spirits retain their personality, behaving as the person did in life. If this was a good and caring person, then the spirit will be the same, but if they were angry or cruel, then that is the trait that will remain.

These negative spirits can cause fear in people not trained in the paranormal and in very rare cases can hurt someone. (In this case, it may be time to contact someone trained in the paranormal.)

Poltergeist

“Poltergeist” is German for “noisy spirit”. As the name indicates they are noisy, disruptive, throw things, slam doors, knock on the wall, move items violently and generally being a pain. They want everyone to know that they are there.

Poltergeists seem to commonly manifest themselves to teenagers or females in the midst of emotional turmoil. We know that energy manifestations are linked to strong emotions or energy output, as common in adolescence. The current theory in the paranormal field is that these “human agents” could manipulate objects in the house by psychokinesis (PK). This type of energy remains unexplained but more mainstream scientists are starting to explore the idea that it does exist.

Portals

These are very little understood. Some paranormal researchers do not believe that portals exist, but others embrace the idea of a doorway to the other side. Graveyards are considered likely portals, as are our churches. Other cross-over ponts may be areas of concentrated sacred energy such as stone circles, megaliths and ancient burial grounds. Early Indians often transported their dead hundreds of miles to a site "where the spirits live.” Some Native Americans continue that practice even today.
